In early September 1967, David Bowie signed a contract to star in the silent horror short film The Image, directed by Michael Armstrong.
On 11 September he took part in a photoshoot with Robin Bean, to take preliminary stills for the film.
The primary purpose was to take images from which a ghostly portrait of Bowie could be painted for use in the film. The artist was William Mason.
The photography session took place on the roof of 39 Manchester Street in London, where Bowie lived with his manager Kenneth Pitt. Other shots were also taken at the nearby Paddington Street park.
The filming of The Image took place on 13 and 14 September 1967 in west London.
