David Bowie auditioned for a part in the musical Hair on 17 June 1968.
The musical had been running on Broadway in New York and was due to move to London’s West End in the autumn. It opened at the Shaftesbury Theatre on 27 September 1968.
The producers were auditioning for changes that were to take place in the cast and I arranged for David to be seen on June 17. When he was recalled for a further audition on the 23rd we expected that he would be offered a part, but once again he was unlucky.
