The second day of filming David Bowie’s Love You Till Tuesday took place at Clarence Studios in London on 1 February 1969.
The 28-minute promotional film was intended to showcase Bowie’s talents, and included his Feathers bandmates Hermione Farthingale and John ‘Hutch’ Hutchinson.
On this day the trio filmed performances of ‘Sell Me A Coat’ and ‘Ching-A-Ling’.
The filming dates for Love You Till Tuesday were 26 January and 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 February 1969. It was directed by Malcolm J Thomson.
Hermione was available to us for that one day only so we filmed the other two sequences in which she was to appear, namely Sell me a coat and Ching-a-ling. As is usual in the film industry this meant another early start and the car picked up Hermione and David at 6.40 having already collected Hutch at 6.00. Perhaps it was having to get up so early, no doubt after a late night, that first caused tempers to fray, but during the course of the day there came from the dressing-room the unmistakable sounds of a row, and when Hermione and David eventually emerged and walked onto the set Malcolm whispered to me “Can you feel the atmosphere?” I could indeed, and I still feel it whenever I watch that particular piece of film, ‘Sell Me A Coat’.
