David Bowie boarded the QE2 in Southampton to set sail for New York on 12 September 1972.
He arrived in America on 17 September. He was accompanied on the trip by his wife Angie, and their friends George and Birgit Underwood. Bowie had developed a fear of flying on his return from Cyprus in July 1972, necessitating a lengthy ocean voyage.
The Spiders From Mars flew to America, arriving on 18 September. The Ziggy Stardust Tour resumed on 22 September 1972 at Cleveland’s Music Hall, the opening date of Bowie’s first US tour.
