David Bowie set sail for New York on 25 January 1973.
He and the Spiders From Mars had spent the previous week adding the finishing touches to Aladdin Sane at London’s Trident Studios. With the recording complete, he boarded the SS Canberra at Southampton.
He was accompanied by Geoff MacCormack, an old school friend whom Bowie enlisted as a travel mate and backing singer. They arrived in New York on 30 January, staying at the Gramercy Park Hotel.
The Ziggy Stardust Tour resumed on 14 February 1973 with a show at New York’s Radio City Music Hall.
