David Bowie and the Spiders From Mars performed two shows at the Rolarena in Leeds on 29 June 1973.
It was the 151st date of the Ziggy Stardust Tour, which had begun on 29 January. The setlist was the same for both shows.
The Leeds Rolarena had been slotted into our itinerary to make good the cancellation at Leeds University on June 2nd. A matinee show was added for good measure, and both shows were successful and unremarkable from the band’s point of view. We were all ready for a break, and we were about to get one, though none of us could have imagined the kind of break that it was to be.

The Rollarena was located further down Kirkstall Road…the block to the left of Studio Road. It was formerly the Silver Blades Ice Skating Rink…before it was the Rollarena. The building then became the Yorkshire Television Studios and still is I believe. I was at the concert on 29th June ’73 and lived in Martin Terrace…off Kirkstall Road
Thank you Maureen! How lucky you are to have been there on that night.
I’ve moved the map point, but please do let me know if it’s still incorrect.
I was there too Maureen at the 8PM show and loved it. Your explanation where it was located and the history filled in a few gaps for me. Thank You!
I’ve only just seen your comment now! You are very welcome…I only lived a few minutes further down Kitkstall Rd at the time…it was an amazing concert, changed the direction of my life really, I was at the 8pm one too.
A few years after I went on to work over the road from the Rollarena at Associated Dairies/ASDA. My friend worked over the road at Yorkshire TV which by then had taken over the Rollarena, mostly for storage. I’d go over for lunch sometimes The stage was still intact…we’d sit there and eat our sandwiches…it felt surreal, she was at the concert too. So grateful I got to see him when I did, especially taking into account Hammersmith 4 days later!
Hi
As a teenager I spent most Saturday mornings chasing girls,at Rollerana next to YTVmainly to no avail unfortunately!
I left school in Leeds (Central High based in the centre of Leeds ) and went with a school friend Eric Ross and his girlfriend Lynn(???).
We were miles down the queue when Lynn said “I am going to faint” and then promptly pretended to faint!
We then went to the front of the queue (smart move eh? ) and when the doors opened ,we were the first people in!
Always remember the first song,Bowie came on with some sort of body crocheted outfit on,the lights went off and support pulled off the arms and legs so just a body outfit on show – for Leeds in 1973 it was if the aliens had landed, absolutely jaw dropping then and now.
Only saw him again at O2 in Leeds with Tin Machine (??) who were terrible – volume set for Wembley but played in 2000 venue!
RIP
