David Bowie left the UK on 29 March 1974. Although he returned numerous times, he never again lived permanently in his country of birth.
The move abroad was primarily for tax purposes, although Bowie did not at this time have a fixed destination in mind. He travelled on this day to Paris, by train and ferry, accompanied by Geoff MacCormack, to meet stage and film producer John Dexter to discuss the Diamond Dogs live show.
Bowie and MacCormack checked in at the Hotel Raphael in Paris. They had intended to stay for just one night, but remained for several nights. While in the city they spent time with Rolling Stones guitarist Ron Wood.
