David Bowie had travelled from London to Paris on 29 March 1974. On 2 April he began the six-hour train journey to Cannes.
Noted for his metallic jumpsuits, Martian spaceman costumes and gobs of eye make-up, Bowie appeared rather conservatively dressed in Cannes recently, sporting nothing louder than a satin-quilted suit and a borsalino hat.

He and friend Geoff MacCormack had intended to stay for two nights at the Carlton Hotel in Cannes, before boarding the SS France for New York, but their extended stay in Paris meant they spent just two hours in the south of France before the ship set sail.
David fell in love with a girl on a revue show and I had a girlfriend there [in Paris] at the time. We had a suite in the Carlton Hotel for three nights but all we managed was to get back just in time to grab a banana, have a quick wash and get in a limo taking us back to get our boat, which we nearly missed.
