David Bowie performed at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California, on 14 August 2002, as part of the Heathen Tour.
It was the 21st date of the tour, which began on 29 November at London’s Royal Festival Hall.
Earl Slick was on guitar, Gerry Leonard played guitar and keyboards, and Mark Plati played guitar, bass guitar, and keyboards. Gail Ann Dorsey was on bass guitar, guitar, and backing vocals, and Mike Garson played keyboards. Sterling Campbell was on drums, and Catherine Russell played keyboards and percussion and sang backing vocals.
This show was part of the Area2 Festival, which ran throughout much of July and August 2002 across North America. The headliners were Bowie and festival founder Moby. Also appearing were Busta Rhymes, Blue Man Group, Ash, Carl Cox, John Digweed, Tiësto, DJ Dan, The Avalanches, Dieselboy, and DJ Tim Skinner.
Bowie had previously appeared at the Shoreline Amphitheatre on 28 and 29 May 1990 for the Sound+Vision Tour, and 12 October 1995 during the Outside Tour. He also performed two Bridge School Benefit shows there on 19 and 20 October 1996.
