Look At The Moon! (Live Phoenix Festival 97) was the fourth of six David Bowie live albums released in 2020-1, all of which were recorded in the 1990s.
The Phoenix Festival was held at Long Marston Airfield near Stratford-upon-Avon, England, from 1993 to 1997. Bowie headlined the opening Thursday night on 18 July 1996, but logistical problems meant that many fans missed his performance.
Bowie, touring the Earthling album, was booked to close the following year’s event on Sunday 20 July 1997. However, he and his band played a secret gig at the BBC Radio 1 Dance Tent the night before, under the name The Tao Jones Index. They played seven songs: ‘I’m Deranged’, ‘Pallas Athena’, ‘V-2 Schneider’, ‘O Superman’, ‘The Last Thing You Should Do’, ‘Dead Man Walking’, and ‘Fame’.
During his headline set on the Sunday, Bowie performed an 18-song set, opening with ‘Quicksand’ from 1971’s Hunky Dory. The main set closed with ‘Little Wonder’, and was followed with encores of ‘Dead Man Walking’, covers of the Velvet Underground’s ‘White Light/White Heat’ and Laurie Anderson’s ‘O Superman’, and finishing with ‘Stay’ from Station To Station.
David Bowie requested some odd items on his Phoenix rider but came close to not getting a few. An urgent, eleventh-hour delivery of his bullworker and carrot juicer required a dash through the arena in a golf cart – not a problem until a plucky punter nicked the cart from under the nose of the briefly distracted driver. A Benny Hill-style chase ended when the man dumped the cart and ran off into the crowd. Adding insult to injury, three girls spotted the key still in the cart and ram-raided the cigarette stall.
