David Bowie: vocals, guitar

A love song written by David Bowie, ‘Love All Around’ was recorded as a home demo but taken no further.

The song was likely written for Hermione Farthingale, Bowie’s partner in the late 1960s. The date of the recording is uncertain, but it is likely to have been made ahead of a mooted second Deram album which never came to pass.

The recording was briefly made available online at the end of 2018, on sites including Apple Music, Deezer, and Akazoo, presumably to retain copyright on the recordings. The streams were credited to JRD, and the album was temporarily titled Grey Angel Joe.

Spying Through A Keyhole tracks on Apple Music, credited to Grey Angel Joe, December 2018

‘Love All Around’ was given a wider release in April 2019 in the box set Spying Through A Keyhole, which took its title from the song, and again later that year in Conversation Piece.

Lyrics

Never seen your kitten eyes look so green
Your eyes are showing magic like I’ve never seen
Close the kitchen door and I miss you like you’ve never been missed before
Seems you got me out of my mind

Oh morning
Looks like you got me
Looks like love all around

Where’d you get that smile? You never smile to the days
Does he know you stole a halo, or is it cigarette haze?
I see a pop tune spying through
A keyhole from the other room
Suppose we all have nothing in common, out of tune

Oh, morning
Looks like you got me
Looks like love all around

If pumpkins, mice and dogs should call to take you home
Then maybe you could tell them they could go alone
Bring the morning to me with the moon within
So I can love you out of your head

Oh, morning
Looks like you got me
Looks like love all around

Oh, morning
Looks like you got me
Looks like love all around
