‘So She’ is the first bonus track on the deluxe edition of The Next Day, David Bowie’s penultimate studio album.
I am far from the best interpreter of Bowie lyrics, but I’ll stick my neck out one more time. ‘So She’ is a wistfully sung love song. It kind of makes me feel romantically sad. Harmonically it is quite sophisticated for such a short piece.
NME, 2013
The song was recorded at New York’s Magic Shop on 12 May 2011. Bowie sang scratch vocals with the band, although they were replaced with final versions on 23 October 2012.
The release
A total of 29 songs were recorded for The Next Day. Fourteen were included on the standard release, with three extras – ‘So She’, ‘Plan’, and ‘I’ll Take You There’ – issued on the deluxe edition.
The vinyl edition was a double-disc set, issued on 1 April 2013, which contained the three additional songs. They were also included on the deluxe Japanese edition, with the additional bonus track ‘God Bless The Girl’.
The Next Day Extra was released on 4 November 2013, and contained two CDs and a DVD. The first CD was of the standard album, while the second disc contained the additional tracks ‘Atomica’, ‘Plan’, ‘The Informer’, ‘Like A Rocket Man’, ‘Born In A UFO’, ‘I’ll Take You There’, ‘God Bless The Girl’, and ‘So She’, as well as two remixes: ‘Love Is Lost’ (Hello Steve Reich Mix by James Murphy for the DFA) and ‘I’d Rather Be High’ (Venetian Mix).
A digital EP was also released to coincide with the box set. This consisted of seven songs from the second CD, excluding ‘Plan’, ‘I’ll Take You There’, and ‘So She’.
